Mobile County Voters to Decide $82 Million Pay‑As‑You‑Go Road and Bridge Program on Nov. 3

Mobile County residents will head to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, to cast votes not only for federal and state offices but also on a critical local ballot measure. The Pay‑As‑You‑Go Transportation Improvement Program, first adopted in 1977, seeks voter approval for $82 million to fund 39 road and bridge projects that together cover nearly 90 miles of roadway and six bridges.

How the program works

The pay‑as‑you‑go model requires voters to approve a fixed amount of funding up front; once the $82 million is authorized, no additional money can be added without another voter decision. County Engineer Kim Sanderson explained, “The beauty of the pay‑as‑you‑go program is you just can’t go back and get more pay‑as‑you‑go funding. Once the voters approve $82 million for a program, $82 million is all there is.”

Local officials back the measure

County Commissioner Connie Hudson praised the program’s track record, saying, “I think that the program has proven itself over and over again, and people have seen the results.” The county’s long‑standing use of the program is cited as evidence that it has consistently delivered needed improvements to Mobile’s transportation network.

Voting details and absentee ballot information

Alabama does not offer early in‑person voting, but eligible voters may request an absentee ballot. Probate Judge Mark Erwin noted that an excuse is required, typically a medical issue, a job that demands the voter’s presence elsewhere, or travel out of the county. The absentee‑application deadline is October 27 by mail and October 29 in person.

Polling places open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters can verify their registration status, locate their polling site, and review a sample ballot at alabamavotes.gov.

What’s at stake for Mobile County

If approved, the $82 million would be allocated to projects such as resurfacing key arterial streets, repairing aging bridges, and improving safety features on heavily traveled routes. County officials argue that these upgrades are essential for supporting local commerce, reducing travel times, and maintaining the safety of commuters and freight traffic.

Critics of the measure, primarily fiscal‑conservative watchdog groups, caution that the program adds a sizable one‑time cost to the county’s budget and could limit flexibility for future infrastructure needs. They urge voters to consider the long‑term fiscal impact before approving the funding.

Why the vote matters

Infrastructure decisions at the county level directly affect daily life for families, businesses, and faith‑based organizations that rely on safe, reliable roads. By voting on this measure, Mobile County residents have a concrete opportunity to shape the quality of their transportation network and support the community’s economic vitality.

As the midterm election approaches, local leaders encourage all eligible voters to participate, emphasizing that the outcome will determine whether Mobile County can continue its tradition of steady, incremental improvements to its roadways and bridges.
