Mobile, Ala. – The City of Mobile announced Monday that one employee has been fired and two others placed on paid administrative leave following an internal investigation that uncovered a $14.7 million theft of taxpayer funds.
According to Fox 10, Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said the loss was not the result of an “inside job” or a technical system breach. Instead, the mayor described the scheme as an elaborate vendor impersonation effort that fooled key staff with fraudulent emails, documents and phone calls.
The mayor declined to release the names of the employees involved, citing safety concerns. He added that the city will cooperate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Secret Service to recover the stolen money and hold the perpetrators accountable.
Details of the investigation are slated for presentation at the City Council meeting scheduled for tomorrow, according to the mayor’s office.
Lagniappe Mobile also reported on the city’s actions, confirming that the employee termination and administrative leaves were part of the city’s response to the fraud probe.
The incident raises concerns for Mobile residents about the security of municipal finances and the effectiveness of internal controls. City officials have pledged to review and strengthen procurement and payment procedures to prevent similar schemes in the future.
What’s next: The City Council will hear additional information about the theft and the city’s recovery plan at its meeting tomorrow. Residents are encouraged to follow the council’s live stream or attend in person for updates on any further actions or policy changes.
