Two longtime friends and former corporate retailers have turned a shared love of literature into a mobile community hub. Angie Parker and Billie Hrupsa co‑own Salty Girl Books, a traveling book boutique that began rolling onto Maryland and Delaware streets in January 2025.
From corporate aisles to a Tiffany‑blue truck
After more than two decades in corporate retail, Parker and Hrupsa asked themselves, “What can we do for ourselves when we retire?” The answer was a brightly painted Tiffany‑blue truck stocked with a carefully curated mix of thrillers, romance, fiction and fantasy. The mobile store pops up at college campuses, festivals, coffee shops and breweries, offering a convenient way for readers to discover new titles without stepping into a traditional storefront.
Social media sparks a surge in popularity
One customer’s TikTok video of the truck went viral, even though the owners didn’t have a TikTok account of their own. “We were trending on TikTok and we didn’t even have TikTok,” Parker said. The clip attracted a wave of followers who now plan trips to see the truck in person. The viral exposure even led to the hiring of the video’s creator as Salty Girl Books’ social‑media manager, further amplifying the boutique’s reach.
Growth and community partnerships
Buoyed by the online buzz, the business added a second truck in June 2026 and launched a monthly book club that meets both virtually and at the truck’s various stop‑offs. The owners also make a point of working with other woman‑owned businesses for services such as accounting, legal counsel and insurance, reinforcing a network of local entrepreneurship.
Looking ahead
Salty Girl Books plans to attend BookCon in New York City next year, taking the mobile boutique’s story to a national audience while remaining rooted in the regional communities that have embraced it. Parker summed up the journey: “You just create something, you put it out there, and then it starts to become a community. A little book truck can turn into something bigger when people share the love of reading.”
