Missouri State’s Sneaker Soirée Turns 40

The Sneaker Soirée, a fundraiser for Missouri State University’s athletic department, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The event, which began in 1986 as the Southwest Missouri State All-Sports Auction, has undergone several name changes over the years, with its current name being adopted to give it a more modern twist.

History of the Event

Former MSU athletic director Bill Rowe, who was tasked with leading the fundraising effort in 1982, recalls being inspired by other universities’ fundraising events. He drew ideas from Western Kentucky’s meat auction and Creighton’s annual sit-down dinner, eventually creating the inaugural All-Sports Auction.

Over the years, the event has featured a wide range of live and silent auction items, including vacations, memorabilia, and fan experiences. This year’s event will include the lease of a 2027 Kia Seltos subcompact SUV. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy food and drinks from several vendors and participate in live interviews with MSU coaches and staff members.

A panel of judges will recognize the guest with the most stunning shoes, in line with the event’s Sneaker Soirée title. Longtime area media figure and Lady Bears play-by-play announcer Tom Ladd has been a regular attendee and has emceed previous events.

Impact of the Event

According to Rowe, the Sneaker Soirée has grossed over $4 million for MSU athletics since its inception. The event has become an annual precursor to the athletic season, combining fundraising with ‘friendraising.’ Ladd notes that the event is a fun way to kick off the sports season, bringing together fans and supporters of MSU athletics.
