Mississippi Prosecutor Details Grand Jury Findings in Nolan Wells Death, Calls Out Civil Rights Attorney’s Claims

By OBBM Network Editorial Staff

Derived from an episode of The Andrew Branca Show.

When a young Black teenager disappears on a Mississippi island, the story can quickly become a flashpoint for national outrage. Yet the facts that emerged from a thorough grand jury investigation paint a very different picture.

Grand Jury Returns a No True Bill

Jackson County District Attorney Angel McGilrath read the grand jury’s conclusion on his show: “the grand jury met last week concerning the death investigation of Nolan Wells and unanimously returned a no true bill.” A grand jury does not decide guilt or innocence; it determines whether there is probable cause to bring charges. In this case, after reviewing witness statements, expert analyses, and a 282‑page selection of cell‑phone data, the jurors found no basis for an indictment.

The prosecutor emphasized that the investigation was “exhaustive” and included evidence supplied by the family’s own independent medical examiner. He added that the grand jury’s role also includes exonerating those who have been falsely accused, underscoring the importance of protecting the innocent from unfounded allegations.

Correspondence Between Prosecutors and the Crump Team

McGilrath disclosed a series of letters exchanged with the Wells family’s counsel, including the civil‑rights attorney Benjamin Crump. In one missive, the district attorney urged the out‑of‑state counsel to review Mississippi’s rules of professional conduct, warning that “red flags” could later be used in disciplinary proceedings. The letters reveal a pattern of the family promising to hand over Nolan’s cell phone for forensic analysis, only to delay or decline.

When the family’s attorneys finally provided a limited excerpt of phone data, the grand jury considered it, but the prosecutor noted that a full extraction never occurred because the family never delivered the device. He said, “I never received the full extraction data as promised, and I never received a complete extraction report of Nolan’s cell phone.”

Benjamin Crump’s Narrative Versus the Prosecutor’s Findings

Crump and his team have publicly framed the case as a racially motivated crime, suggesting that three white boys and a Black boy were on an island when only the white friends returned. The prosecutor refuted this, stating, “There is absolutely no evidence to support the allegations that Nolan’s disappearance and death were racially motivated.” He highlighted that Nolan chose to stay on Horn Island on July 4, 2026, and that the investigation uncovered no “scintilla of evidence” of hate‑based violence.

According to McGilrath, the narrative was amplified by “outsiders and influencers” seeking to divide the community. He stressed that his duty is owed to the community as a whole, not to a single client, and that disciplined restraint is essential to preserve the integrity of ongoing investigations.

Community Impact and the Search for Truth

The Wells family’s grief is undeniable, and the prosecutor acknowledged his own personal loss, saying, “I know what it is to bury a child.” He argued that the public’s desire for a quick answer should not override due process. By releasing the correspondence and the grand jury report, he aims to provide transparency while safeguarding the legal process.

Local officials also warned that false rumors have led to threats and harassment in the community. The district attorney’s approach—offering the family’s independent medical examiner full access to forensic labs and inviting him to testify—demonstrates an effort to balance compassion with the rule of law.

Why the Case Matters Beyond Mississippi

While the Nolan Wells investigation is a state‑level matter, it reflects a broader national conversation about how high‑profile deaths are politicized. The prosecutor’s insistence on evidence‑based conclusions challenges the tendency to jump to conclusions based on race or emotion. As the grand jury’s “no true bill” underscores, the legal system requires concrete proof before labeling a death a crime.

For listeners of The Andrew Branca Show, the episode offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a prosecutorial office, the pressures of media scrutiny, and the delicate balance between community grief and judicial responsibility.
