Officials from Nolan Wells’ hometown are rallying behind their sheriff after being accused of being derelict in their duties. The accusation came from NAACP President Derrick Johnson, who claimed that Mississippi officials failed to properly handle the case.
Investigation Ongoing
Mississippi State Senator Jeremy England defended the sheriff and district attorney, saying they have the utmost integrity and want to get the facts correct. England also stated that the investigators won’t be swayed by public pressure, and they will take their time to ensure a thorough investigation.
Congressman Mike Ezell also expressed his confidence in the current Jackson County sheriff, John Ledbetter, who is running the investigation. Ezell, a former sheriff and police officer, said he knows the demands and pressure of the job and is confident that Ledbetter will handle the matter with integrity.
An independent autopsy was performed on Wells, and the results did not point to foul play. The autopsy found an area of red discoloration on Wells’ head, but the cause and manner of death are still pending further investigation.
