Mission District Sees Business Changes

The Mission District is seeing some changes in its business landscape. The Mellow SF, a plant store located at 3236 21st St., is closing its doors later this week. Owners Lorena Cortez and David Velasco opened the store in 2020, just before the pandemic lockdown. However, after two years of good business, they started seeing a 30 to 40 percent decline in sales.

New Business Opportunities

Despite the decline, Velasco and Cortez are not giving up. They are retaining the storefront and plan to embark on a new business opportunity, although they are not ready to share details just yet. The Mellow SF also has a coffee shop and barber shop location in the Upper Haight, which will soon feature live music and serve cocktails, beer, and wine.

In other news, Florecita Panaderia is moving to a new location at 3349 23rd St., taking over the space formerly occupied by Shuggies. The Mexican bakery will leave its current location at 2050 Bryant St. and open at its new home on September 12th.

Additionally, Double Union, a hacker and maker space for women and non-binary people, is looking for new members. The organization, currently located at 650 Florida St., offers a space for members to use tools, equipment, and resources, and provides a supportive environment for learning and creativity.

Supervisor Jackie Fielder has also requested that the Budget Legislative Analyst evaluate the cost and impact of adopting Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation legislation in San Francisco. This legislation would allow food vendors to operate small-scale food operations from their own homes, which could have a significant impact on street food vendors in the Mission District.
