Minneapolis is set to host a series of events to honor the memory of George Floyd, whose tragic death in 2020 sparked a global movement for racial justice. The Rise and Remember Festival, now in its sixth year, will include a variety of activities from May 22 to May 25, 2026, aimed at celebrating Floyd’s life and fostering community unity.
Community Gatherings and Events
The festival will kick off with a Day of Remembrance at George Floyd Square, where attendees are encouraged to lay yellow roses in memory of Floyd. Leslie Redmond, head of the nonprofit Win Back, emphasizes the importance of remembering the past to prevent repeating it, especially in today’s political climate.
On May 23, the Night of Honor will recognize community members who have contributed to racial justice efforts. Gospel artist James Fortune will perform, and the event will feature a purple carpet in tribute to the late musician Prince.
Educational and Cultural Activities
The Perry Talks Symposium on May 24 will feature Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta as the keynote speaker, followed by a panel discussion on racial justice and First Amendment rights. The symposium aims to engage attendees in meaningful conversations about freedom of speech and racial equity.
Throughout the festival, performances by local artists and musicians will take place, including events hosted by The Development, which focuses on activism through hip-hop. These performances will honor victims of police brutality and encourage community solidarity.
Celebration of Innovation and Legacy
The festival will conclude with a day of celebration featuring local vendors and performances. A special focus will be on young innovators, with five young entrepreneurs presenting their business ideas. The event will also include a candlelight vigil led by Brass Solidarity, a band known for their performances at George Floyd Square.
Organizers of Rise and Remember emphasize the festival’s inclusive nature, inviting everyone to participate in the remembrance and celebration of George Floyd’s enduring legacy.
