Koren Dennison, a 28-year-old Milwaukee resident, has created an intergenerational community space called My Kousin’s House. The space, located in her Metcalfe Park home, focuses on family literacy building and aims to bring people of different ages together.
Community-First Approach
Dennison’s vision for My Kousin’s House is to create a space where people can learn from each other, have fun, and engage in meaningful conversations. She believes that literacy and lifelong learning must include entire families, especially in a city where educational disparities have persisted for generations.
Events at My Kousin’s House blend entertainment with meaningful conversation. Participants have gathered for a “Grey’s Anatomy”-themed trivia night, a community spelling bee, and a discussion and dance party inspired by “Black Is King,” a film by Beyonce. Future events will explore topics ranging from natural hair care and gardening to Black history and food justice.
Building Connections
Dennison’s project is an attempt to create the kind of community she believes many people are searching for: a place where learning feels joyful, where generations learn from one another, and where meaningful conversation becomes a form of care. Despite the positive feedback she has received, Dennison admits that she still faces fear and uncertainty. However, her conviction to create a space that brings people together keeps her going.
