A new analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reveals that nearly 18 million American women between the ages of 45 and 62 are overdue for at least one recommended cancer screening test.
Importance of Cancer Screenings
Cancer screenings save lives by detecting cancer early or even before it starts, but many women are not getting tested. Women are often unaware of the recommendations or lack the time or energy to complete the tests.
For women at average risk, screening for breast cancer should begin at age 40. Cervical cancer screening, either with a smear or HPV smear, should start at age 21 and be repeated every three to five years. Colorectal cancer screening should begin at age 45 and be periodically followed up.
Dr. Barry Ramo emphasizes the importance of getting tested, saying, “If you’re one of the 18 million women in the United States who’s not being screened appropriately, it’s important to put those excuses away and go ahead and get tested.”
