Mike Pence Warns GOP of Populist Shift Toward Isolationism and Big Government

During a recent interview on Indianapolis radio station WIBC, former Vice President Mike Pence used the platform to caution the Republican Party about an emerging populist current that, in his view, threatens core conservative principles. While promoting his new book, “What Conservatives Believe: Rediscovering the Conservative Conscience,” Pence shifted the conversation from book‑tour talking points to a broader critique of the party’s direction.

Populist Drift and Foreign‑Policy Concerns

Pence praised the Trump administration for its firm stance against Iran, its support for Israel, the extension of the 2017 tax cuts, and the expansion of American energy production. He then warned that “voices and forces” within the GOP now push for a platform of big government, isolationism, and protectionism—positions he says are at odds with decades of conservative advocacy.

On trade, Pence agreed with Katz that China remains a legitimate target for U.S. policy, noting the $250 billion in tariffs that remain from his own administration. However, he drew a clear line against broad tariffs on U.S. allies, describing the former administration’s “liberation day” tariffs as “essentially the largest peacetime tax increase in American history.” He welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to block those tariffs, even as new proposals continue to surface.

National Security and the Ukraine Conflict

When pressed about the “neocon” label often applied to him, Pence responded that labels matter less than principles. He reiterated a traditional conservative approach to war: pursue clear objectives, achieve victory, and withdraw—rejecting both endless wars and a complete retreat. He cited the inconsistent U.S. response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as evidence that an isolationist instinct is already influencing GOP policy.

Anti‑Israel Rhetoric and Anti‑Semitism

Pence linked the populist drift to a rise in anti‑Israel sentiment, warning that such rhetoric can quickly turn into anti‑Semitism. He emphasized that anti‑Semitic language has no place in America and called on party leaders to guard against it.

Implications for the Republican Party

According to Pence, the populist movement is not simply a new face of conservatism; it is a distinct current that could replace traditional conservative values if left unchecked. He argued that the party’s stance on debt, Israel, and Ukraine are early indicators of this shift.

The interview concluded with a reminder that listeners can hear the full discussion on WIBC’s weekday programming or access the segment on‑demand through the station’s website.
