Mick Schumacher to Drive for Meyer Shank Racing in 2027 IndyCar Season

Indianapolis – In a move that excites both local fans and the broader motorsports community, Mick Schumacher confirmed he will become a driver for Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) beginning with the 2027 IndyCar season. The German racer, whose father Michael Schumacher won seven Formula 1 championships, will pilot the No. 66 Honda for the Indianapolis‑based team.

Team lineup and expectations

Schumacher will join fellow driver Marcus Armstrong, who is shifting to the No. 60 entry that will be vacated by 2026 Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist. The pairing gives MSR a blend of youthful energy and proven racecraft, positioning the squad as a serious contender for future Indy 500 victories.

“I’m super excited to be working with everyone at Meyer Shank Racing and really excited to be joining such an ambitious team,” Schumacher said on Friday. “It’s going to be a special journey.” His enthusiasm reflects a broader optimism among Indianapolis fans who see his arrival as a boost to the city’s racing heritage.

Schumacher’s IndyCar debut

After a rookie season with Rahal‑Letterman Lanigan Racing, Schumacher posted a season‑best eighth‑place finish at Nashville Superspeedway. He also completed all 200 laps of his first Indianapolis 500 in May, starting 27th and finishing 18th. While the result was modest, completing the full distance in his debut demonstrates durability and a solid foundation for future growth.

MSR’s technical staff believes Schumacher’s experience in European open‑wheel racing will translate well to the unique demands of IndyCar, especially on high‑speed ovals. The team’s engineers highlighted his feedback abilities and adaptability as key assets for car development throughout the 2027 schedule.

Impact on the local racing scene

Indianapolis, known as the “Racing Capital of the World,” welcomes the news as another reason for fans to rally behind the sport. Local businesses anticipate increased attendance at upcoming events, and the partnership may inspire youth programs that promote STEM education through motorsports.

Community leaders have praised the move, noting that high‑profile drivers like Schumacher bring national attention to the city’s racing infrastructure, supporting jobs at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and surrounding vendors.

Looking ahead

With the 2027 calendar set to include iconic venues such as Road America, Texas Motor Speedway, and the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, MSR aims to contend for podium finishes early in the season. Schumacher’s commitment to the team signals a long‑term vision, and fans can expect regular updates as the partnership develops.

As the 2027 season approaches, Indianapolis residents and motorsports enthusiasts alike will be watching closely to see how the new driver lineup performs on the track and how it contributes to the city’s enduring racing legacy.
