Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El‑Sayed says streamer Hasan Piker was invited to campaign for him

During a recent interview, popular Twitch streamer Hasan Piker said that Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El‑Sayed personally asked him to appear on the campaign trail. Piker, who is known for his left‑leaning commentary, said the request was a surprise and that he had never before delivered a formal campaign speech.

Backlash from the Democratic establishment

After the rally, Piker reported a wave of criticism from establishment Democrats and policy groups such as Third Way. He explained that the media and party insiders treated his appearance as a more serious political endorsement than his previous work with New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, despite Piker having previously profiled and fundraised for El‑Sayed.

“I didn’t realize how much the media would think this is different,” Piker said. “From my perspective, who cares if I’m doing a rally with a politician? I’ve already had the guy on my broadcast a hundred times, I’ve fundraised for him, I like him, even though I have disagreements.”

El‑Sayed distances himself

El‑Sayed’s campaign has tried to downplay the connection, referring to Piker simply as “a streamer from California” and emphasizing that the focus should remain on substantive issues facing Michigan voters. At the state Democratic Party nominating convention, El‑Sayed told reporters, “I am not interested in a conversation about a social media person in California. Let’s not forget what actually matters in our politics.”

The candidate also issued an apology for past remarks made after a March attack on a Michigan synagogue, saying his comments were not intended to cause pain and reaffirming his condemnation of the terrorist act.

Implications for the Senate race

The episode highlights the growing tension within the Democratic Party between progressive activists and the party establishment. While El‑Sayed seeks to energize younger, digitally‑savvy voters, the backlash suggests that traditional party leaders remain wary of aligning with controversial online personalities.

Michigan voters will see how the controversy shapes the primary campaign as the filing deadline approaches and candidates vie for endorsements, fundraising, and grassroots support.
