Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El‑Sayed distances himself from streamer Hasan Piker’s remarks on American Jews

Michigan’s Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate, Dr. Abdul El‑Sayed, issued a public statement on Monday distancing himself from recent comments made by popular Twitch commentator Hasan Piker. Piker, who appeared with El‑Sayed at several primary events, warned that portraying American Jews as uniformly supportive of Israel could fuel violence against the community.

El‑Sayed’s response

In a written release, El‑Sayed said, “I believe all Americans deserve the right to advocate for what they believe without fear of violence. This is particularly true for communities that have been intimidated for their beliefs in the past.” He added that antisemitism is “a scourge” that must be addressed in all its forms and clarified that no one speaks for his campaign other than himself and his staff.

Context of the controversy

During a livestream that lasted more than an hour, Piker argued that opposing Israel is not inherently antisemitic, but that many “Jewish institutions” present a monolithic view of the community. He suggested that if American Jews continue to be portrayed as singularly invested in Israel, “someone is going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews.” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the notion as “dangerous and antisemitic.”

Piker’s spokesperson later described El‑Sayed’s statement as “neutral” and called the backlash a “smear.” The streamer also said he was not advocating violence, only warning about rhetoric that could incite it.

Political fallout

El‑Sayed’s Republican opponent, former Congressman Mike Rogers, criticized the response as insufficient, saying the candidate “doesn’t have the guts to disavow his running mate” and labeling him “unfit to represent our state.” Several Democratic strategists urged El‑Sayed to make a clearer break from Piker, noting that the streamer’s past remarks—including a comparison that “Hamas is a thousand times better” than Israel—could become a liability in the general election.

Campaign focus

El‑Sayed emphasized that his campaign will concentrate on issues that affect everyday Michiganders: gas prices, grocery costs, quality schools, and health care. He reiterated that the race should not be reduced to a controversy over a Twitch personality.

Looking ahead

With the November Senate race shaping up as a key battleground for control of the U.S. Senate, both parties are watching how the controversy may influence voter perceptions. El‑Sayed’s next steps will likely involve reinforcing his policy platform while navigating the fallout from his association with Piker.
