Michigan Democratic candidates report doxxing and death threats ahead of 2026 midterms

Warren, Michigan – A group of Democratic candidates for the 2026 midterm elections say they have been targeted with online campaigns that publish their names, photos and personal phone numbers without permission. The disclosures have resulted in harassing calls and, in at least one case, a violent confrontation that required police involvement.

Candidates describe the intimidation

State House candidate Katrina Manetta, running in Michigan’s 50th House District, told FOX 2 that she began receiving text messages and phone calls from unknown numbers after ads appeared online displaying her face, name and private cell phone. “I expect tough questions as a candidate,” Manetta said, “but I did not approve of my personal number being out. It puts me at risk and has led to death threats.”

Manetta said she is not the only one affected. Six additional Democratic candidates reported similar incidents of having their personal information posted publicly. While the source of the leaks remains unknown, the candidates say the attacks have escalated to the point where law enforcement had to intervene in one confrontation.

Advertising claims and response

One of the online ads includes the line “Paid for by Michigan Freedom Fund.” When contacted, a representative for the Michigan Freedom Fund said the organization only lists phone numbers that candidates have voluntarily posted on their social‑media profiles. The spokesperson condemned any threats or harassment directed at the candidates, stating, “We do not support intimidation of any kind.”

Election context

With Election Day just a week away, the doxxing scandal adds a new layer of concern for candidates and voters alike. State officials have reminded the public that threatening a candidate is a criminal offense and have urged anyone receiving threatening communications to report them to local law enforcement.

Election officials in Michigan have also emphasized that all voters should have the opportunity to evaluate candidates based on their policies and qualifications, not on personal attacks or intimidation tactics.

What voters can do

Voters who encounter suspicious ads or receive unsolicited messages containing personal details of a candidate are encouraged to forward the material to the Michigan Secretary of State’s office. The office can investigate potential violations of campaign‑finance laws and take appropriate action against entities that disseminate private information without consent.

As the campaign season reaches its final stretch, candidates and community leaders are calling for a respectful political environment that allows voters to make informed choices without fear of personal retaliation.
