Metropolitan Museum Cancels John Galliano Exhibit After Community Backlash

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced Monday that it will not present the planned John Galliano solo exhibition, which was slated to open as the centerpiece of the Costume Institute’s spring 2027 show and the annual Met Gala. The decision follows extensive dialogue with Galliano, museum leadership, and community representatives who expressed deep concern over the designer’s past antisemitic and racist remarks.

Institutional response

Max Hollein, director and CEO of the museum, said, “Following thoughtful discussions with John Galliano, we have together decided not to proceed with the exhibition.” Galliano issued a statement of his own, acknowledging the pain his earlier comments caused to Jewish and Asian communities and expressing sorrow for the hurt.

Background on the controversy

Galliano, once celebrated as a leading creative director at Christian Dior, was dismissed in 2011 after a series of antisemitic and racist statements from 2010‑2011 resurfaced, leading to a conviction in a French antisemitism trial. He later rebuilt his career, returning to prominence as the head of Maison Margiela in 2014, where he remained for a decade.

His planned Met show would have made him only the third living designer to receive a solo exhibition at the museum’s Costume Institute, an honor traditionally reserved for the most influential figures in fashion.

Community and political reaction

Jewish community leaders had been consulted before the exhibition was announced, but the backlash intensified after the reveal. New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin praised the museum’s reversal, stating that honoring Galliano would have been a “gut punch” to the Jewish community amid rising antisemitism.

The Met’s decision underscores the growing expectation that cultural institutions consider the impact of historical statements on today’s diverse audiences.

What’s next for the Met?

The museum said a new exhibition will replace the Galliano show, with details to be announced later. The annual Met Gala, overseen by Vogue editor‑in‑chief Anna Wintour, will still proceed as scheduled, continuing its role as the fashion world’s most visible charitable event.
