Meta’s Federal Child‑Safety Trial Begins in Oakland

Opening arguments are set for Tuesday in a federal courtroom in Oakland, California, marking the start of a high‑profile trial against Meta Platforms. Attorneys general from California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey are leading the case, seeking substantial monetary damages and court‑ordered changes to how Facebook and Instagram operate.

State Lawsuits Target Meta

The four states are part of a broader coalition of twenty‑nine states that filed lawsuits against the tech giant in 2023, alleging that Meta knowingly designs features that addict children and that it collects data on users under age 13 without parental consent, violating federal child‑privacy statutes. The remaining twenty‑five states will have their own trials later this year, while Meta also faces related actions in state courts.

Allegations Focus on Youth Mental Health and Data Privacy

Plaintiffs argue that Meta’s platforms contribute to a youth mental‑health crisis by deliberately engineering addictive experiences for minors. They also contend that the company routinely gathers personal information from children under the age of thirteen without the required parental permission, a breach of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

“This week, we’re in court with the largest consumer‑protection lawsuit in American history. We’ll show a jury that Meta concealed what it knew about the harm its products cause young people because looking away was more profitable,” said Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman in a statement.

Meta Defends Its Record

Meta responded that it believes it has a strong defense. “We are proud of our record in protecting teens on our platforms and the amount of effort that we’ve put into developing protections over the years, even before these cases were ever filed, and continuing to the present day,” the company said. It added that it looks forward to presenting evidence to the judge and jury.

Trial Logistics

The case will be overseen by U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, appointed by President Barack Obama in 2011. The trial is expected to run six to eight weeks and will feature testimony from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, other senior executives, and former employees.

Judge Rogers has presided over several high‑profile technology disputes, including the lawsuit filed by Elon Musk against OpenAI and the Epic Games v. Apple antitrust case.

Broader Context

This trial is part of an expanding wave of litigation against major social‑media companies, including Google’s YouTube, TikTok and Snap, over claims that their platforms harm young people, illegally collect data, and are deliberately engineered to foster addiction.

The outcome could have significant implications for how tech firms design and moderate content for minors, as well as for the enforcement of federal privacy protections.
