Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced plans to invest more than $9.1 billion in its first artificial intelligence data center in Canada. The facility will be built in Sturgeon County, Alberta, and will be powered by a natural gas-fired plant.
Project Details
The data center will use a closed-loop cooling system, which won’t draw water from surrounding sources. Meta also plans to invest $42 million in local infrastructure, including roads and water systems.
The 932-megawatt power plant, known as the Greenlight Electricity Center, is expected to begin operating in the second half of 2030. The project is seen as a significant investment in Alberta’s economy, with the province having created a regulatory framework to attract data center investment.
