With Halloween only a few days away, Meridian police are stepping up to help families enjoy a safe night of trick‑or‑treating across the valley. Lt. Brandon Clyde told local reporters that the biggest danger isn’t the candy, but unexpected movements by drivers and excited children on the streets.
Motorist awareness is essential
“Kids are extremely unpredictable. You never know when they’re going to dart out,” Clyde said. He urged drivers to expect the unexpected and to stay alert for children crossing sidewalks, driveways and poorly lit streets. “Make sure your kids have either glow sticks around their hands or little glow‑stick necklaces,” he added.
Parents and grandparents share practical tips
Local residents echoed the police message. A Meridian grandmother recommended high‑visibility clothing, while a grandfather suggested lanterns and flashlights to illuminate dark routes. “Make sure it’s well‑lit streets that you’re on,” the grandfather said.
Meridian mother Angie Mejia chose to keep her children home this year, citing safety concerns. “I don’t want Halloween. No, I don’t want. And I think, ‘Oh, this is, uh, not good for my family,’” she explained.
Technology can help
Clyde also noted that many families now use cell‑phone tracking features to keep an eye on their kids while they wander the neighborhood. “If your kids have cell phones, be able to use the tracking capability just to keep an eye on the kids,” he advised.
Police presence on Halloween night
Meridian police will have additional officers patrolling neighborhoods on Halloween, and they encourage anyone who feels unsafe to call law enforcement. The department’s message to drivers and pedestrians alike is simple: stay alert, keep phones down, and watch for glow‑sticks.
Community spirit remains the focus
Above all, Clyde emphasized that Halloween is a time for families to gather and enjoy the holiday together. “Make sure your kids have either glow sticks… and parents go out with them,” he said. By combining careful driving, visible costumes, and a visible police presence, Meridian hopes to ensure a fun and secure evening for all trick‑or‑treaters.
