Oklahoma lawmakers examine AI use in state agencies to boost efficiency

Oklahoma’s Capitol is focusing on how artificial intelligence can make state government work more efficiently. Lawmakers gathered this week to hear updates from agencies that are testing AI tools, and to discuss possible legislation that would set clear guidelines and protections.

Governor’s AI Task Force leads the effort

Governor Kevin Stitt created the AI Task Force in 2023 with the goal of positioning Oklahoma as a national leader in responsible AI adoption. The task force advises both the executive branch and the Legislature on how to integrate AI while maintaining safeguards for privacy, security and fairness.

Transportation department pilots AI‑powered asset tracking

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) is preparing to launch an AI‑driven program that will automatically identify the location and damage type of road assets. “Allows for accurate identification of assets location, damage type, and integration to our system. Currently, we’re on the precipice of this going live. Once this phase is complete, it’ll be fully deployed early 2027,” said Tara Cullum, ODOT director of administration.

ODOT also expects the technology to reduce traffic‑related noise and to save the agency more than $170,000 each year by streamlining inspections and maintenance planning.

Academic perspective on responsible AI use

Madeline Mitchell, a professor at the University of Central Oklahoma, emphasized the importance of human oversight. “It’s not a black‑or‑white binary; it’s how you layer governance and training where there is a human in the loop,” she told the committee.

Legislative next steps

Following the briefing, several lawmakers indicated they may draft bills to formalize AI oversight in state agencies. Proposed measures could require agencies to conduct risk assessments, publish transparency reports and establish clear protocols for data handling.

The discussion reflects a broader bipartisan consensus that technology can improve government services, but only when paired with robust safeguards that protect citizens’ rights and uphold constitutional principles.

Why this matters to Oklahomans

Efficient AI tools could mean faster road repairs, more accurate infrastructure data and cost savings that ultimately benefit taxpayers. At the same time, the focus on safeguards reassures families that their privacy and safety remain top priorities.

As the AI Task Force continues its work, Oklahoma lawmakers intend to keep the public informed and ensure that any new regulations align with the state’s commitment to responsible innovation.
