Mercury spill at Massachusetts General Hospital prompts hazmat response

Boston police confirmed that their hazardous‑materials unit arrived at Massachusetts General Hospital shortly after 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday to address a mercury spill inside the facility. The Boston Fire Department took primary responsibility for managing the situation, while police provided support and coordination.

Hospital response and patient care

A spokesperson for Mass General Brigham said a patient who was exposed to the chemical substance is currently receiving treatment. Despite the spill, the spokesperson emphasized that “MGH remains open to operations and there is no interruption to patient care,” reassuring the community that essential services continued without disruption.

Investigation and public safety

Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the mercury spill, and the investigation remains ongoing. NBC10 Boston has reached out to both the police and fire departments for additional details but has not yet received a response. No further information was immediately available at the time of reporting.

What residents should know

Mercury is a toxic heavy metal that can pose health risks if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Hazmat teams are trained to contain and clean up such spills safely, minimizing exposure to patients, staff, and visitors. The swift response by Boston’s emergency services helped ensure that the incident was contained quickly and that the hospital could continue to serve the community.

Residents and hospital visitors are advised to follow any instructions from hospital staff or emergency responders should additional safety measures be required. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses and more details become available.
