Menasha Unveils Canal Commons: New Mile-Long Waterfront Park

Menasha, Wisconsin, is celebrating a significant addition to its community with the opening of Canal Commons, a mile-long waterfront park and trail. This new development, located between the Trestle Trail and downtown Menasha, was unveiled on Wednesday, marking a major transformation of the area.

A Tribute to Menasha’s History

Mayor Austin Hammond highlighted the park’s homage to Menasha’s unique history, which is deeply rooted in industry and tourism. ‘A unique history with deep roots to industry, but also tourism with our waterfronts — and an abundance of it,’ Hammond remarked, emphasizing the city’s commitment to being ‘Your Place on the Water.’

The park features rocking benches and historical plaques along the trail, which ends at Tayco Street near the Bridge Tower Museum, just south of downtown. Additionally, Water Street, which runs adjacent to the trail, has been repaved as part of the project.

Funding and Future Prospects

The Canal Commons project was funded with approximately $4 million, with $2.074 million provided by state taxpayers and about $2 million by local taxpayers. The Fox Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau also contributed to the funding. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, who attended the unveiling, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting its potential to enhance Wisconsin’s outdoor recreation offerings. ‘The good thing about it is, it’ll be part of what we consider Wisconsin’s outdoor recreation,’ Evers stated, highlighting the park’s role in attracting visitors to the city.

Menasha hopes that the revitalization of this area will spur further downtown development. ‘It unlocks even more of the potential for folks to be able to come and utilize our trails, enjoy the beautiful nature that we have here in the city, but also go right through downtown,’ said Hammond.

With the park now open, Menasha looks forward to welcoming both locals and tourists to enjoy this new community space, which promises to be a cornerstone for future growth and development in the area.
