A Melissa police officer is on routine administrative leave after fatally shooting an armed man while responding to a disturbance Sunday night.
According to Melissa Police, officers were called to a home on the 2600 block of E. Melissa Road at about 11:30 p.m. and encountered a situation involving an armed individual and another occupant. An officer discharged his firearm during the incident.
The armed man, who has not yet been publicly identified, was injured in the gunfire and was given first aid before being taken to a hospital. He later died from his injuries.
No other injuries were reported, and police did not reveal any other information about what led to the disturbance.
The Texas Rangers have assumed responsibility for a separate criminal investigation into the shooting.
