Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., asked two medical university leaders in a tense hearing on Tuesday to directly answer whether non-biological women can have babies and didn’t receive a straight answer. The hearing focused on the impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives on medical schools.
Questioning the Deans
Miller asked Dr. Hawgood, Chancellor of the University of California San Francisco, about a classroom guide that advises against using the term ‘pregnant women’ and instead suggests ‘pregnant people.’ Hawgood responded that the terminology is part of a curriculum to help students who are facing a wide diversity of patients, and that the ‘vast majority of pregnancies are in women.’ When Miller asked if a non-biological woman has ever had a baby, Hawgood said a ‘transgender person can,’ but did not directly answer the question.
Miller also questioned Dr. Steve Dubinett, dean of UCLA School of Medicine, about a required course that advises ob-gyn students not to assume gender identity. Dubinett did not directly answer Miller’s question about whether someone can have a uterus but not be a woman, saying that the school is ‘treating transgender people’ in compliance with state and federal law.
Reaction to the Hearing
After the hearing, Miller said, ‘It shouldn’t take a medical degree to answer a basic biology question. This hearing exposed that our medical schools have become consumed by political ideology that they’re losing sight of reality. Patients just want doctors grounded in common sense. Medical schools that abandon scientific truth should lose their accreditation.’
