Meals on Wheels of Benton County Closes After 41 Years

Meals on Wheels of Benton County, a staple in the community for over four decades, is closing its doors. The organization has been providing meals to approximately 100 residents daily across areas including Avoca, Little Flock, Pea Ridge, and Rogers. This closure marks the end of a significant service that has supported many local families and individuals.

According to Mike Jeffcoat, the president of Meals on Wheels of Benton County, the decision to cease operations was driven by rising food prices and a shortage of volunteers. ‘Our younger volunteers are fighting just to keep their jobs, and our older ones can’t afford the gas,’ Jeffcoat explained, highlighting the economic pressures facing both volunteers and the organization itself.

Economic Challenges

The economic challenges faced by Meals on Wheels are part of a broader trend affecting many in Arkansas and beyond. Steve Goode, executive director of the Arkansas Retailers Association, noted that high fuel prices have led to increased grocery costs. ‘Anytime fuel prices increase, you are going to see an increase in grocery prices,’ he stated. This has been particularly evident in the beef market, where prices have risen by 14.8% compared to last year, according to the Department of Labor.

These rising costs have placed additional strain on organizations like Meals on Wheels, which rely on donations and volunteer support to operate. The board of directors plans to sell the group’s building on 13th Street in Rogers as part of the closure process.

Impact on the Community

The closure of Meals on Wheels of Benton County will leave a gap in services for many residents who depended on the organization for daily meals. As the community adjusts, there may be increased pressure on other local charities and services to fill this void. The situation underscores the importance of community support and volunteerism in maintaining essential services for vulnerable populations.
