McKean County Residents Raise Concerns Over Solar Farm Project

By OBBM Network Editorial Staff

Derived from an episode of The Local Angle.

In the heart of McKean County, a controversy is brewing over a solar farm project that has left many residents feeling uncertain about their community’s future. The project, which aims to generate electricity from solar power, has been met with resistance from locals who are concerned about the potential environmental impact and lack of transparency from the company behind the project, Energix Renewables.

Background on the Project

The solar farm, located in Sargent Township, has been in development for several months. The company has already begun installing solar panels and has connected to the grid, despite concerns from residents about the project’s potential effects on local wildlife and water quality.

According to Jim Tingley, host of The Local Angle, the project has been shrouded in secrecy, with many residents feeling left in the dark about the project’s details. ‘They’re taking away real green to put in their fake green,’ Tingley said, referring to the project’s potential environmental impact.

Environmental Concerns

One of the primary concerns among residents is the potential impact on local wildlife. The project has already been linked to the migration of turtles out of the area, and there are fears that the noise from the solar panels could be driving away other wildlife. Additionally, there are concerns about the potential for water pollution, as the project is located near two different watersheds.

‘Any runoff or pollution that would come out of these solar panels and their infrastructure could technically contaminate both the Allegheny River and the Susquehanna River,’ Tingley said. ‘It’s a huge concern for us, and we need to make sure that the company is taking steps to mitigate any potential risks.’

Economic Impact

The project has also raised questions about the economic benefits for the local community. While the company has promised to create jobs and generate revenue, many residents are skeptical about the long-term benefits. ‘The tax money is going to Germany, France, and Canada,’ Tingley said. ‘It’s not staying in our community, and that’s a problem.’

Closing Thoughts

The controversy over the solar farm project in McKean County highlights the need for greater transparency and community involvement in large-scale energy projects. As the project moves forward, it’s essential that residents’ concerns are heard and addressed. The future of the community depends on it.
