Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, has urged Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to be transparent about his health issues. In a letter to the 84-year-old senator, Beshear expressed concerns about McConnell’s ability to hold office in the United States Senate.
McConnell’s Health Issues
McConnell has been absent from the Senate for three weeks due to an unknown condition. His office has not provided details about his health or a timetable for his return. The only public insight into his condition came from leaked emergency dispatch audio, which revealed that McConnell was ‘unconscious’ and may have suffered a heart attack.
McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, traveled to China shortly after his hospitalization and remained there until this week. Her office stated that McConnell’s health did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.
Despite the lack of clarity on his condition, McConnell has spoken with top Senate Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso.
