Mayor Small kicks off Atlantic City road‑paving projects with community celebration

Atlantic City, N.J. – On Monday, September 21, the city will launch two long‑awaited road‑paving projects that promise smoother travel for commuters and shoppers alike. Crews will repave Atlantic Avenue from Tennessee Avenue to Albany Avenue during overnight hours, while Pacific Avenue will be resurfaced from Hartford Avenue to Connecticut Avenue in daylight.

Project details and schedule

The Atlantic Avenue work is scheduled for overnight shifts to minimize disruption to daytime traffic and local businesses. The stretch between Tennessee and Albany Avenues is a key corridor for both residents and visitors, linking downtown attractions with residential neighborhoods.

Pacific Avenue’s resurfacing will take place during the day, allowing crews to complete the job efficiently while keeping traffic flowing. The segment from Hartford to Connecticut Avenues serves a busy commercial strip, and the city expects the improvements to boost safety and curbside parking conditions.

Mayor Small’s community celebration

Mayor Marty Small is turning the start of construction into a community event. He will host a “Paving & Behavin’ Party” at 8 p.m. on the same night work begins. The celebration will be held on Florida and Atlantic Avenues, where food trucks, live music, and family‑friendly activities will be provided for residents.

“We want to show our citizens that public‑works projects can be a cause for celebration, not inconvenience,” Mayor Small said in a pre‑event press briefing. “This party reflects our commitment to keeping Atlantic City vibrant while we improve the infrastructure that supports our neighborhoods and businesses.”

Impact on the community

Both projects are slated for completion by the end of 2026, a timeline that aligns with the city’s broader infrastructure plan. Smoother streets are expected to reduce vehicle wear, improve emergency‑response travel times, and enhance the overall aesthetic of the downtown area.

Local business owners have expressed optimism. “Better streets mean more foot traffic and a safer environment for our customers,” said a proprietor of a café near Atlantic Avenue. Residents also welcomed the mayor’s decision to combine the construction kickoff with a public gathering, noting that it fosters a sense of shared purpose.

What drivers should expect

Motorists traveling on Atlantic Avenue should anticipate temporary lane closures and detours during the overnight work window. Signage will be posted well in advance, and the city’s traffic‑management team will monitor conditions to keep delays to a minimum.

Drivers on Pacific Avenue can expect standard daytime construction zones, with reduced speed limits and alternating traffic flow. The city advises commuters to plan alternate routes where possible and to stay informed through the city’s official website and social‑media channels.

Looking ahead

These paving initiatives are part of Atlantic City’s ongoing effort to modernize its streetscape and support economic growth. The city plans additional public‑works projects in the coming years, focusing on water‑line upgrades, sidewalk repairs, and park enhancements.

Mayor Small concluded, “Investing in our roads is investing in our future. When we work together—government, businesses, and citizens—we build a stronger, more resilient Atlantic City for generations to come.”
