Mayor Johnston’s security detail defuses fake‑knife scare near Union Station

Denver – On a recent morning at Union Station, Mayor Mike Johnston was recording a short video promoting the city’s vibrant arts scene when a man approached him wielding what appeared to be a real knife. The weapon, however, was a realistic‑looking plastic replica.

Quick response by the mayor’s security team

According to a statement from the mayor’s spokesperson, Jon Ewing, an officer assigned to the mayor’s security detail initially drew his firearm in the low‑ready position, unaware that the knife was not genuine. The man then bent the blade of the replica, clearly demonstrating that it was not a functional weapon.

Mayor Johnston’s security detail promptly contacted the Denver Police Department. Before officers could arrive, the individual walked away and was not identified or arrested. “The officer then holstered his weapon and detail told the man to move along,” Ewing wrote. “The incident was over in a matter of seconds and no one was harmed.”

Mayor emphasizes downtown safety

Mayor Johnston has repeatedly highlighted Denver’s low crime rates in the downtown core, a point reiterated by Ewing in the statement. “It’s still safe and the mayor plans to visit the city center every day,” the spokesperson said, underscoring the administration’s confidence in the city’s public‑safety efforts.

While the mayor has received occasional threats by phone, this was the first reported in‑person encounter, according to the mayor’s office.

Legal context

Colorado law classifies the use of a simulated weapon to create fear as potential felony menacing, though prosecutors must prove the perpetrator acted knowingly. No charges have been filed at this time.

Community reassurance

Local residents and business owners expressed relief that the situation was resolved swiftly and without injury. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilant security measures for public officials, especially in high‑traffic areas like Union Station where tourists and locals converge.

Denver’s police department continues to monitor public‑safety concerns and encourages anyone who witnesses suspicious behavior to report it promptly.
