Indianapolis mayor Joe Hogsett met with Major League Soccer leadership last week and put forward a new stadium concept near Lucas Oil Stadium. Local businesses look for clarity
Stadium Village Business Association President Jeremy Baynai said the ongoing uncertainty has hurt nearby shop and restaurant owners. “The biggest thing we are looking for … is clarity to know what the future holds so we can go out and find the right partners and developers,” Baynai said.
Local restaurateurs are already optimistic. Daniel Ahlbrand, owner of Empire Street Bar and Grill, noted that the west side of the stadium sees less tourist traffic than the Meridian Street side. “Putting something else on this side of the stadium and trying to move some of the nightlife and tourism would be fantastic,” he said.
Financing the project
The Capital Improvement Board, which operates several major venues across Marion County, indicated that a professional‑sports development area taxing district would be the starting point for financing. Board officials declined to discuss additional funding options.
Background and next steps
Two years ago, the city’s original MLS bid centered on the downtown heliport site, but that effort stalled. A groundbreaking west of the stadium once marked a planned home for Indy Eleven, yet the city later withdrew support, and the site is not slated for an MLS stadium.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber responded to the meeting on X, praising Hogsett’s commitment. “Indianapolis has established itself as one of America’s great sports cities, with a strong track record of hosting major events and a growing passion for soccer,” Garber wrote. “We look forward to continuing our conversations as the city’s plans continue to take shape.”
