Mayor Eric Genrich Announces He Will Not Run for Re‑Election in Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. — In a video posted to YouTube on Thursday, Mayor Eric Genrich announced that he will not seek re‑election when his current term concludes in April 2027. Genrich, who has served as Green Bay’s mayor since 2019, said he remains “as passionate today as I have ever been about public service” and expressed confidence in the city’s future, but indicated that his “chapter as your Mayor will come to an end.”

Reflection on Seven‑And‑A‑Half Years in Office

During the statement, Genrich reflected on the accomplishments of his administration. He highlighted partnerships with local governments, nonprofits, and businesses that have produced new, high‑quality housing at a rate “not seen in decades.” He also noted a focus on safety and resiliency, and claimed that the city has accelerated infrastructure repairs in “fiscally responsible ways.”

Commitment to Finish the Term

Genrich pledged to serve the community fully for the remaining six months of his term. “I have more than six months left until the end of my term, and I pledge to you, my fellow citizens, that I will serve you to the best of my ability until my last moment in office,” he said.

Political Background

Before becoming mayor, Genrich served three terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Democrat. His decision not to run opens the field for the upcoming April 6 mayoral election. Former Mayor Jim Schmitt, who led Green Bay from 2003 to 2019, is currently the only announced candidate. Schmitt previously announced he would not seek a fifth term in the 2019 race.

What Comes Next for Green Bay?

The mayoral race is expected to attract additional candidates in the weeks ahead, as local leaders and community members consider who will carry forward the city’s development agenda. Voters will have the opportunity to evaluate candidates on issues such as housing affordability, infrastructure investment, public safety, and fiscal stewardship.

City officials have indicated that the municipal administration will continue its ongoing projects without interruption, ensuring that essential services and planned improvements remain on schedule. The mayor’s office also affirmed its commitment to a smooth transition, promising to work closely with any incoming mayor to maintain continuity of governance.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the upcoming election, attend candidate forums, and participate in the democratic process that shapes Green Bay’s future.
