HOOVER, Ala. — Mayor Nick Derzis used his October newsletter to highlight the city’s ongoing need for dedicated arts facilities and to promote a new fundraising event. After reviewing Hoover’s finances, the mayor said the city cannot yet fund a full‑scale performing‑arts center, but he remains focused on securing studio and gallery space for local creators.
Arts as a pillar of community life
Derzis emphasized that a vibrant arts scene enriches quality of life, offers children creative outlets, and fuels economic development. He noted that neighborhoods with active cultural programs attract visitors, support restaurants and retail, and help shape a stronger sense of place.
Realistic path forward
While the previous administration discussed a performing‑arts center, the current mayor explained that a recent financial review showed Hoover lacks the capital to deliver such a project at this time. “I will not make a promise unless I am 1,000% confident we can deliver it,” Derzis wrote, adding that the city will continue to explore realistic options for a permanent arts hub.
Mayor’s Ball benefits the Hoover Arts Foundation
On Saturday, Oct. 17, the mayor and his wife, Stephanie Derzis, will host the inaugural Mayor’s Ball at the Wynfrey Hotel. The event is a partnership with the Hoover Arts Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that supports arts education and programming throughout the city. All ticket sales will be directed to the foundation.
The evening will feature Nashville’s high‑energy 12 South Band, a performance by Miss Hoover Julia Schumacher, a showcase by the Hoover Alabama Dance Academy led by Pam Sayle, and a set by Ryan Gray, the 2026 winner of “Hoover’s Got Talent.” Derzis expressed pride in the community volunteers who helped bring the event to life.
Looking ahead
Derzis reaffirmed his commitment to finding a realistic path to restore dedicated arts space, referencing the former Bluff Park facility that closed in 2020. He urged residents to stay engaged, attend the Mayor’s Ball, and support the city’s broader vision of a more creative, attractive, and economically robust Hoover.
