Mayor Brandon Johnson Announces 2027 Reelection Bid at DuSable Museum

Chicago – Mayor Brandon Johnson confirmed on Friday that he will seek a second term, unveiling his formal campaign launch on Sunday at the DuSable Black History Museum on the South Side. “There’s more work to be done, but we are certainly moving in the right direction,” the mayor said, pointing to a sharp decline in violent crime and new investments in youth employment and mental‑health care.

Campaign kickoff and key themes

Johnson framed the upcoming race as a choice between “billionaires” and a broad coalition of Black, brown, white, Asian, young and old residents from every corner of the city. He reiterated his pledge to keep Chicago “the safest big city in America” and to continue “investing in people” through expanded city‑run summer jobs and the reopening of mental‑health clinics.

Policy record highlighted

During his first term, the mayor signed executive orders targeting data centers, companies contracting with federal immigration enforcement agencies, and gun manufacturers and dealers. He also reinstated a Department of Environment, expanded paid‑time‑off requirements and began a phased reduction of the tipped minimum wage – a measure later paused by the City Council.

Funding challenges and upcoming budget

Johnson entered the race at a fundraising disadvantage. As of late June, his campaign reported roughly $631,000 on hand, compared with Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ nearly $22 million and State Comptroller Susana Mendoza’s $1.6 million. The mayor argued that the disparity underscores his opponents’ fear of his coalition’s strength.

He also faces a looming $900 million budget deficit. While he has not released detailed spending plans, Johnson signaled a possible return to a corporate head tax on larger companies and hinted that a property‑tax increase remains unlikely given the election timeline.

Polling snapshot

A University of Chicago poll released in July found that 54 percent of respondents disapproved of Johnson’s job performance, while only 13 percent expressed a desire to see him run again. The poll does not provide a trend line, so the numbers represent a single moment in public opinion.

Field of challengers

The 2027 mayoral ballot is expected to feature about a dozen candidates, including Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, State Comptroller Susana Mendoza, philanthropist Willie Wilson, U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley and former alderman George Cardenas. Candidates must gather at least 12,500 valid signatures to qualify for the Feb. 23 primary, a process that began in late July and may see legal challenges.

Looking ahead

Johnson’s campaign will likely emphasize the recent 60‑year low in homicides and his efforts to expand services for underserved neighborhoods. As the race intensifies, the mayor’s ability to translate his policy record into voter support will be a central test of his leadership ahead of the Feb. 23 election and a possible April 6 runoff.
