Mayes Middleton Wins GOP Nomination for Texas Attorney General

In a closely watched race, State Senator Mayes Middleton emerged victorious over U.S. Representative Chip Roy in the Republican primary for Texas Attorney General. Middleton, known for his staunch support of President Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda, is now positioned to potentially succeed Ken Paxton as the state’s top legal officer.

A Battle of Conservative Credentials

The contest between Middleton and Roy was marked by intense competition and significant financial investment. Middleton, who is also the president of an independent oil and gas company, invested approximately $17 million of his own funds into his campaign. Despite this, Roy, a former Texas assistant attorney general and chief of staff to Senator Ted Cruz, managed to secure a late surge in fundraising from key supporters.

Throughout the campaign, Roy emphasized his extensive courtroom experience, arguing that it made him the more qualified candidate for the attorney general position. “Having been the first assistant attorney general makes me ready on day one,” Roy stated, highlighting his prosecutorial background.

Accusations and Allegiances

Middleton countered by questioning Roy’s conservative credentials, particularly pointing out instances where Roy had diverged from Trump’s policies. “Chip Roy is someone that has spent a decade fighting the president,” Middleton remarked, referencing Roy’s past criticisms of Trump.

Roy, however, defended his record, asserting his long-standing support for Trump’s America First agenda while maintaining his independence as a thinker. He criticized Middleton’s approach, suggesting that allegiance to MAGA principles cannot simply be bought.

Looking Ahead

With Trump’s decision to remain neutral in the runoff, Middleton’s victory sets the stage for a likely general election battle against Democratic State Senator Nathan Johnson. Johnson, who nearly secured his party’s nomination, is expected to be a formidable opponent in the upcoming election.

As the race progresses, Texas voters will have the opportunity to decide which candidate best represents their values and priorities in the role of attorney general.
