The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) held a meeting on Cape Cod to share the latest design plans for the proposed replacement of the Sagamore Bridge. The new bridge will feature two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, an additional lane on each side for entering and exiting vehicles, and an expanded shoulder. A barrier-protected pathway for pedestrians and cyclists will also be included.
Design and Construction
The $2.1 billion bridge will be both wider and longer than the current 91-year-old bridge. The renderings shared by MassDOT offer a closer look at the design, which includes a 4.5-percent incline and distinct arches that will be constructed off-site and transported through the canal. The bridge’s piers will be on land and feature a viewing platform level with Canal Service Road.
Construction could get underway late next year after the state awards the contract. About 100 construction firms have expressed interest, and MassDOT will narrow the field to three to five finalists by September.
