The Massachusetts Lottery has officially entered the digital world with the launch of Mass. Lottery Online, a platform that allows players to purchase tickets and play games online. According to Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, the online platform is necessary for the agency to remain relevant and produce over $1 billion in revenue annually.
Online Games and Features
The online platform offers a range of games, including Mass Cash, Megabucks, Mega Millions, Powerball, and Millionaire for Life. Additionally, the platform features over 20 different “eInstant” games, which serve as a digital alternative to scratch tickets. Players can set personalized deposit and play limits, and the platform includes features such as a session timer and in-game pop-up messages to promote responsible gaming.
The revenue generated from online sales will be directed towards supporting early childhood education and care in Massachusetts. The Lottery has estimated that online sales will bring in $70 million in net profit in the first year of operation, with revenue flowing into the Early Education and Care Operational Grant Fund.
Regulation and Oversight
The launch of the online platform is the result of a five-year contract between the Massachusetts Lottery and Aristocrat Interactive, which provides the online lottery platform. The contract is structured around a revenue-sharing model, with a maximum of 5% of revenue flowing to Aristocrat.
The Massachusetts Lottery has implemented various measures to ensure responsible gaming and protect players, including multi-factor authentication, verified devices, and personalized deposit and play limits. The platform is available to players 21 years or older, and online sales are limited to players within the state of Massachusetts.
