Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has signed a bill into law that allows abortions up to birth, making it the 10th state to do so. The Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act gives healthcare workers greater discretion in determining whether to perform an abortion later in pregnancy, without facing legal penalties.
Pro-Life Advocates Condemn the Law
SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser condemned the signing of the law, arguing that late-term abortions can involve dismemberment of the unborn child. She also noted that the US is among a small number of countries that permit abortion throughout pregnancy.
Healey said the law is intended to ensure families facing medical complications late in pregnancy can access abortion in Massachusetts rather than having to travel out of state. The law is set to take effect in 90 days.
