Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has filed a $7.7 billion interim budget to ensure the state can pay its bills next month. The new fiscal year starts next Wednesday, and the governor’s proposal will give a six-person conference committee more time to negotiate a final budget if they need it.
Interim Budget Details
The interim budget contains spending authorizations to meet “necessary obligations” through July 31 and extends capital accounts that would otherwise expire on June 30. It also allows for local aid payments to be delivered to any city, town, regional school district, or independent agricultural and technical that’s experiencing an “emergency cash shortfall.”
The House passed its fiscal 2027 budget April 29, followed by the Senate on May 21. Budget negotiators had their first meeting on June 3. The branches are in agreement on 99% of the spending in the roughly $63.4 billion budget bills, the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation said in an analysis released last week.
