Masked visitor’s banana prank on Watauga doorstep prompts police warning

Watauga police responded to a report of suspicious activity on the evening of Oct. 18 after a homeowner’s doorbell camera captured an unidentified individual wearing a mask resembling former President Joe Biden. The visitor, dressed in a shirt that read “FREEDOM,” approached the front door, ran his fingers over the camera twice, and then proceeded to eat a banana through the mask before walking away.

Police investigation finds no crime

Officers arrived at the residence at approximately 8:05 p.m. and reviewed the video evidence on site. After a thorough search of the surrounding neighborhood, they found no additional signs of the masked individual and uncovered no evidence of a criminal offense. The department noted that while the incident did not result in any charges, it highlighted the potential for harmless‑looking pranks to be misinterpreted as threatening behavior.

Department urges caution and community reporting

Watauga Police Department issued a public reminder that actions intended as jokes can create unnecessary concern for neighbors and may lead to dangerous confrontations. “The department also reminds the public that behavior perceived as threatening can lead to serious injury,” the agency said in a statement to Fox News Digital. Officers encouraged residents to contact law enforcement if they observe suspicious or unsettling activity rather than confronting individuals on their own.

“We also encourage everyone to exercise good judgment and recognize that behavior intended as a joke or prank can sometimes cause unnecessary concern for others,” the department added.

Context of similar sightings

The police noted that social‑media posts have described similar masked sightings in the area, though no additional reports have been filed directly with law enforcement. The department continues to monitor the situation and will update the public if any new information emerges.

Community response

Neighbors expressed a mix of amusement and unease over the video, with some commenting that the stunt was “bizarre” while others stressed the importance of maintaining a safe environment. Local leaders reiterated the department’s message that public safety is a shared responsibility and that residents should remain vigilant without resorting to vigilantism.

As of now, the identity and motive of the masked individual remain unknown, and police assessments remain unchanged: no criminal offense was identified.
