Maryland reports 49 motorcyclist deaths in first half of August, urges caution

Maryland’s Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Maryland State Police announced a surge in motorcyclist fatalities during the first half of August. Eight people died in crashes from Aug. 10 through Aug. 16, raising the state’s overall traffic‑death count to 255 as of Aug. 17.

Fatalities by category

Since the start of August, the state has recorded six driver deaths, five motorcyclist deaths, three passenger deaths and two pedestrian deaths. The cumulative totals for the year so far include 114 drivers, 49 pedestrians, 37 passengers and six bicyclists.

Motorcyclist deaths are on pace to exceed the 49 recorded for all of 2025. That figure matches the total number of motorcyclist fatalities recorded statewide during the entire previous year.

Comparison with prior years

Maryland’s overall roadway deaths declined in 2024 and 2025 and are trending lower again in 2026. At the same point in the previous year, 296 people had died, compared with the current 255.

Other categories remain below last year’s totals. In 2025, Maryland logged 234 driver deaths, 109 pedestrian deaths, 83 passenger deaths and 10 bicyclist deaths.

State safety message

MDOT and the Maryland State Police reiterated the “Slow the Fast Down” campaign launched in July, urging motorists to reduce speed, avoid distractions, never drive impaired and always wear seat belts. The agencies specifically asked drivers to be extra vigilant around motorcycles, noting that motorcycles can be harder to see, especially in blind spots.

Additional reminders include moving over for vehicles with flashing lights, slowing down in work zones, sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists, and pulling over safely if a vehicle experiences a flat tire or other roadside emergency.

What families can do

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to talk with teen drivers about the dangers of speeding and the importance of looking twice before changing lanes or making turns. Wearing proper protective gear, such as helmets and reflective clothing, remains a critical safeguard for motorcyclists.

Community groups and local churches are also invited to spread the safety message during the summer travel season, reinforcing the shared responsibility of keeping Maryland’s roads safe for all families.
