Wylie senior Wyatt Wynne unleashes a pitch during Wednesday night’s Game 1 of a Class 6A Division I bi-district playoff series against Rockwall. Wylie won 3-2.
Wylie beat Rockwall 3-2 in Game 1 of the Class 6A Division I bi-district playoffs on Wednesday. Strong pitching and timely hitting powered the Pirates to the win.
Chase Martin set the tone on the mound. He struck out seven over 5 2/3 innings and allowed just two hits and one run (zero earned). Wyatt Wynne came on in relief in the sixth and “slammed the door” on Rockwall, allowing one run (zero earned) on no hits with one strikeout.
The Pirates won even after striking out 14 times at the plate. Rockwall struck first, using three walks in the opening inning and an RBI sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
Wylie answered in the fourth. Preston Camp hit a lead-off triple and scored on an RBI single by Koji Paul to tie the game. The Pirates took the lead in the fifth when Noah Smith and Cullum Doan reached on back-to-back singles and Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Aiden Beck.
Camp’s bases-loaded walk in the sixth pushed the lead to 3-1. Camp, Smith and Riddick McClelland each finished with two hits. Rockwall cut the gap to 3-2 after back-to-back Wylie errors, but a ground-ball out fielded at third by Smith produced the final out.
Wylie will try to complete the first-round sweep tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Rockwall High School.
