Marquette women’s volleyball falls to No. 4 Stanford in four-set loss

Marquette University’s women’s volleyball squad returned to the road on Sunday afternoon for a challenging non‑conference matchup against No. 4 Stanford at the Cardinal’s Maples Pavilion. The Golden Eagles, now 2‑3 on the season, were unable to overcome the defending national powerhouse, falling 25‑20, 25‑18, 25‑20, 25‑12.

Key performers for Marquette

Senior outside hitter Carson Tyler led the attack with 12 kills, while sophomore Tani Juric contributed 11. Freshman Emma Parks also reached double figures, adding 11 kills of her own. Setter Luanna Markus directed the offense, posting a team‑high 36 assists and chipping in four kills, five digs and two blocks. Molly Welge posted a .294 hitting percentage, the best on the team, and matched Markus with two blocks. Defensive specialist Emi Juric anchored the back row with a team‑leading 13 digs, and Avery Helms added nine digs plus a career‑high two service aces.

Match flow

The opening set saw Marquette battle back from an early deficit, spurred by a 5‑0 run anchored by Tyler and Markus. Despite tying the set at 18‑18, Stanford closed the set on a decisive 7‑2 run to take it 25‑20.

In the second set, the Golden Eagles stayed even through the first half, building a 9‑7 lead with kills from Welge, Tyler and freshman Schmidt. A service ace from Helms briefly sparked momentum, but Stanford answered with a 7‑1 surge, ultimately winning the set 25‑18.

Marquette responded strongly in the third set, racing to a 7‑2 lead behind Juric and Tyler. The team extended the advantage to as many as nine points, using solid net play and blocks from Welge, Markus, Schmidt and Parks. Stanford narrowed the gap late, but Marquette held on to claim the set 25‑20.

The fourth set proved the toughest. After an early 6‑5 tie, Stanford unleashed a 4‑0 run to create separation. Marquette fought back, cutting the deficit to 14‑10 with a block from Markus and Welge, but could not generate another sustained run. Stanford pulled away to close the set 25‑12 and seal the match.

Looking ahead

Marquette will return to the Al McGuire Center for its home opener on Friday, Sept. 11, beginning a weekend home‑and‑home series with Illinois. The first serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. Central Time. Coach insert name if known emphasized the team’s resilience and highlighted the experience gained against a top‑ranked opponent as a building block for the remainder of the season.

While the loss drops the Golden Eagles to a sub‑.500 record, the performance of several underclassmen offers optimism for future contests. The team will look to translate the lessons learned from Stanford’s high‑powered offense into improved consistency at home.
