Toronto Maple Leafs’ top pick Gavin McKenna has changed his jersey number to 92. McKenna previously wore the number 72, but the team signed two-time Stanley Cup champion goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who has worn the number 72 for most of his career.
McKenna had to get creative with his new number, as the obvious options were not available. The number 9 is retired in honor of Charlie Conacher and Ted Kennedy, and the number 27 is retired in honor of Frank Mahovlich and Darryl Sittler.
McKenna reached out to one of the previous players to wear the number 92, Jeff O’Neill, to ask if he was comfortable with McKenna using the number. O’Neill gave his approval, and McKenna will wear the number 92 for the upcoming season.
