According to court documents, the incident occurred on March 4 when the Lyft driver picked up Murphy in Deerfield Beach for a trip to Jacksonville. After arriving at the West Palm Beach gas station located at 1840 Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and Tamarind Avenue, the driver stepped inside to prepay for fuel, leaving Murphy alone in the vehicle.
When the driver returned, he saw Murphy exit the back seat, take the driver’s seat, and drive away. The driver attempted to stop the theft but was unable to catch the vehicle. He called a family member, who arrived at the station and began following Murphy while the driver stayed on the line with 911 dispatch.
Murphy’s escape ended when he collided with the rear of another vehicle on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard. Police reports state that Murphy fled the scene on foot, but the victim’s family member exited his own car and tackled Murphy to the ground. West Palm Beach police officers arrived shortly thereafter and placed Murphy under arrest.
Legal proceedings
Murphy entered a not‑guilty plea to a charge of grand theft automobile with damage exceeding $1,000. Judge Willis ordered the $15,000 restitution to be paid by September 28, giving Murphy a brief window to satisfy the court’s financial judgment. A plea conference is also scheduled for September 28 in a West Palm Beach courtroom, where further resolution of the case will be discussed.
