WOODLAND TOWNSHIP, N.J. – A tragic crash on a curved stretch of Route 563 left one man dead and his wife critically injured after their car slammed into a home, igniting a large fire.
Police say the 82‑year‑old driver experienced a medical incident while traveling the curve, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and strike the bedroom of a nearby residence. The driver was pronounced dead at the hospital. His 76‑year‑old wife, who was a passenger, was air‑lifted to Cooper Medical Center in critical condition.
The couple, both longtime residents of Toms River, were traveling together when the incident occurred. The homeowners inside the house were present at the time of the crash but were not in the bedroom that was hit and escaped injury. Their dog was also unharmed.
Neighbors react to the crash
Local resident Benito Rinaudo, who lives near the curve, described the scene as “horrible” for the elderly homeowners who now must find temporary shelter. “It’s horrible for my neighbors who are 80 years old being displaced right now,” Rinaudo said.
Rinaudo, who has witnessed several accidents on the same curve, called the road “dangerous” and noted that the speed limit is posted at 35 mph. “People can’t handle the curve,” he explained.
He said the recent crash is the most severe he has seen, but it is part of a pattern. “Two to three a year and seem to be getting more intense,” he added, recalling a 2022 incident where a vehicle lost control and struck a tree on the same stretch.
Community safety measures
In an effort to warn drivers, Rinaudo installed a large flashing arrow near his property at a cost of about $1,000 and placed large logs along the roadside, saying, “All of the logs in front of my house, I keep them there so my fiancé can get the mail safely.” He also mentioned that he has replaced his fence multiple times because of crashes.
Rinaudo has repeatedly emailed Burlington County officials about the safety concerns, but county officials have so far determined that no additional action is required based on their findings. “I don’t know about this case what’s going on, whether medical, I have no idea; not gonna say it happens all the time; it’s gonna happen again,” he said.
Investigation continues
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are reviewing the driver’s medical history, road conditions, and any potential vehicle issues to determine why the driver lost control on the curve.
Emergency responders worked quickly to extinguish the fire and secure the scene. The displaced homeowners are currently staying with relatives while the house undergoes repairs.
Local officials have urged residents to exercise caution on the curve, especially during inclement weather or when traveling at higher speeds. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in the area and may prompt further review of traffic‑calming measures.
