San Antonio police said a man wanted on a felony narcotics warrant was critically wounded after an exchange of gunfire with undercover officers on the West Side Sunday evening.
Incident details
Chief Jesse Salame reported that officers responded to a shooting at about 7:20 p.m. in the 8200 block of Marbach Road. Undercover officers had been following the 31‑year‑old suspect to several locations to confirm his identity. When the suspect realized he was being followed, he allegedly waved a firearm from his vehicle and opened fire, prompting the officers to return fire.
The pursuit continued to the intersection of Marbach Road and Horal Drive. Investigators said the suspect attempted to turn around, causing at least one vehicle crash and striking a tree near a Burger King. The suspect fled on foot but collapsed shortly thereafter and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Other persons involved
A front‑seat passenger was taken into custody, while a rear‑seat passenger fled and remains at large. Several nearby vehicles were struck during the exchange of gunfire, but no officers or bystanders were injured. Police recovered a firearm from the suspect’s vehicle and several shell casings from Horal Drive.
Officer experience and ongoing investigations
Chief Salame noted that the four officers involved have between eight and ten years of law‑enforcement experience. He emphasized that the details of the incident remain preliminary as multiple investigations continue.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by law‑enforcement officers as they pursue individuals suspected of serious drug offenses while striving to protect public safety.
