A man is accused of accidentally firing a semi-automatic rifle into an occupied motel room in Stonington on Friday night and has been arrested. Officers responded to America’s Best Value Inn on Stonington Road around 11:45 p.m. for a report of a gunshot.
According to police, the 21-year-old man from Massachusetts, accidentally discharged a Glock 19 9mm gun while handling it in his motel room. The bullet reportedly entered an occupied neighboring room. No injuries were reported.
Investigators said the man admitted the gun discharged while he was handling it. Authorities also said he tried to conceal the damage after the incident. Police seized a Glock 19 handgun, a 15-round magazine and his Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms.
He was arrested and is facing charges including illegal discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment, possession of a high-capacity magazine and breach of peace. The man was released on a $25,000 bond and is due in court on July 2.
