Malawi Plans Repatriation Amid South African Anti-Immigrant Violence

Malawi has announced plans to repatriate its citizens from South Africa in response to a surge in violence against African migrants. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the program would assist those who have requested help, with further details to be provided once logistical arrangements are finalized.

Recurring Xenophobic Attacks

Xenophobic attacks have been a persistent issue in South Africa, where immigrants are often scapegoated for economic difficulties, including high unemployment rates. Recently, anti-immigrant groups have issued a June 30 deadline for illegal immigrants to leave the country, heightening fear among migrant communities.

In a related incident, Mozambique reported that five of its citizens were killed in violence in the coastal town of Mossel Bay over the weekend. Meanwhile, Ghana has already repatriated hundreds of its nationals last week.

Government Response

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the issue in parliament, emphasizing the importance of addressing illegal immigration without resorting to violence, xenophobia, or vigilantism. The South African government has pledged to take action against those inciting or engaging in violence against migrants.

South Africa, with the largest economy on the continent, is a common destination for individuals from neighboring countries seeking employment. It also hosts refugees and asylum seekers fleeing conflicts in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
