The Major Taylor Trail in Morgan Park is set to celebrate the unveiling of a new art installation and the restoration of a natural area this Saturday. Local community groups, including the Major Taylor Trail Keepers and Friends of the Major Taylor Trail, have collaborated with the Trust for Public Land to enhance this beloved local trail.
Community and Art Unite
The event will feature the installation of ‘Holding Space,’ a public art piece by artist Nnenna Okore. This canopy-like steel structure, inspired by Nigerian Ankara fabric, aims to create a welcoming gathering spot for neighbors along the trail. The art installation is part of a broader effort to make the trail a vibrant community space.
The celebration also marks the completion of a half-mile natural area restoration by the Park District, replacing invasive plants with native species to improve the trail’s ecological health. This initiative reflects the community’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing local green spaces.
Local Advocacy and Support
Brenda Dixon, founder of the Major Taylor Trail Keepers, has been instrumental in advocating for the trail’s improvements. Having grown up in the area, Dixon recalls the trail’s origins as an abandoned railroad track. Her efforts, alongside local groups, have transformed it into a cherished community asset.
The Major Taylor Trail Keepers have worked closely with the Trust for Public Land since 2023, overcoming challenges in coordinating with various government entities responsible for different trail sections. Their perseverance has led to significant improvements, supported by grants and community fundraising efforts.
Future Plans and Community Engagement
The city adopted a consolidation plan in 2025 to streamline efforts among government agencies, recommending further trail extensions and amenities. The Trust for Public Land played a crucial role in realizing the recent improvements, supported by Salesforce, Capital One, and the John W. Baird Memorial Fund.
Saturday’s event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony and family-friendly art activities. The Major Taylor Trail Keepers will also host a Juneteenth-themed fundraiser to continue supporting the trail’s upkeep and community engagement.
Brenda Dixon envisions the trail becoming a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from beyond Chicago. The event at Wild Blossom Meadery and Winery, strategically located along the trail, symbolizes the potential for future business development in the area.
