A fire destroyed the Carrabassett Valley Veterinary Clinic in Kingfield, Maine, on Tuesday. The Office of the State Fire Marshal reported that the fire, which included explosions, started on the exterior rear of the building near the trash storage area.
Firefighters were still battling the flames when investigators arrived. The building, a large two-story structure with a metal roof and metal siding, sustained extensive damage and is considered a total loss.
All employees and animals were safely evacuated from the clinic. However, a resident in an upstairs apartment was also forced to escape, and two cats in the apartment died as a result of the fire. A bystander who attempted to put out the fire using a portable fire extinguisher sustained minor burns.
Investigators are continuing to examine the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
